Dorset is based on the coast of the English Channel. The county has a population of around 770,000. Approximately 50% of the residents live in the South East Dorset Conurbation. Dorset on whole is very rural and has a low population density. It has rich history that dates back to the Neolithic era. The Celtic tribe were conquered by the Romans here. The Saxons made Dorset a ‘shire’. They have also encountered more than their fair share of civil unrest during the Monmouth Rebellion, English Civil War, Black Death and preparations of the Invasion of Normandy during the Second World War.
Dorset is the place to be if you enjoy Sailing, Sea Kayaking, Power Boating and Rowing. Over 50% of the county is labelled as being an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. 75% of it’s coastline is part of Jurassic Coast Natural World Heritage Site. Dorset has no motorways and the agriculture industry is on the decline, with tourism taking over. It is the birthplace of Thomas Hardy and hosts one of the biggest events across Europe during the Great Dorset Steam Fair.
